about

This is about when I was on a job to aid an adult in distress who had been self-harming. It's sung from her perspective. It transpired that it was the mother of a kid I used to be friends with when we were at school, and I ended up searching the house I used to play in as a child. It was a very odd experience standing there in uniform years later and it seemed impossible how things could have ended up that way. The song is about how people can be left alone in life and that everybody has the responsibility to aid someone who is lonely and in need.

lyrics

8’oclock and it’s time again;
Phone and bottles on the table.
The hurting fades as I drift away,
Drowning in sofa and medicines.
I see myself in the steel…

It’s my cry for help to the operator,
an ambulance every week,
But I’m still sent back to drink.

My daughter had a beautiful baby,
But there was an abusive father.
They took my children away from me,
Now I see myself in the steel.

I’m left with the shadows of people past and gone,
Preying for someone to break in.
I’m left with the shadows of people past and gone,
Preying for someone to break in.

Break in.

I arrive to see a woman that I once knew.
I didn’t first notice the cuts on the surface.
I used to know her daughter when we were young,
And not I’m in a stranger’s house in uniform.
How does this happen?

In the absence of hope, you are never alone.f
There’s always someone to answer your call.

I’m left with the shadows of someone who’s past and gone,
She’s preying for someone to break in.
I’m left with the shadow of someone who’s past and gone,
She’s preying for someone to break in.

Break in.
